Also named 'El Guapo', Bas Rutten originally from Holland is now located in California where he trains in MMA and trains UFC fighters such as Kimbo Slice.
Sebastiaan Bas Rutten alias “El Guapo” became interested in martial arts when he was just 12 and at that time he probably wouldn't have even imagined that one day he would become a three time King of Pancrase, Heavyweight Champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a certified MTBN Thai Boxing instructor and a color commentator!
Bas Rutten was born in Tilburg, Netherlands on February 24,
1965. In the beginning, Bas was particularly interested to learn how
to fight with nunchaku (most likely from being inspired by a Bruce Lee film!) but his parents didn’t want him to
learn. However, after sometime he got their permission and started the training in Tae Kwon Do.
Rutten received a 2nd degree black belt in Tae kwon Do and a 5th degree black belt in Kyokushin. He started to take part in Thai boxing at the age of 20 and scored 14 consecutive knockouts. After those 14 consecutive wins, he tasted his first defeat that was also a knockout loss. According to Rutten, Kyokushin Karate was the base of his striking skills and he learnt submission fighting later on. He implemented a nice combination of different fighting techniques.
During fights punches and kicks to the liver of his opponents were considered the trademark of his fights and he refers this as
a "liver shot" in his DVDs of Combat. He is also quite well known because of his "Rutten jump" that he used to perform in the ring
after every win.
He started his professional MMA career (mixed martial arts) in 1993 with Pancrase (A Japanese fighting organization). Apart from loving mma clothing whether it was hoodies, mma t-shirts, gloves or any mma fight wear. Because of insufficient ground fighting experience he had to suffer some defeats , but in 1996 when he came back in MMA fights, he balanced all the previous accounts and became three time King of Pancrase. Since then Bas Rutten has founded "The Bas Rutten System"; developed many martial arts videos and authored books on martial arts as well. Talk about Bas Rutten & MMA at the MMA Forums! You could say "Bas Rutten" is a household name within the MMA world!
